Comparative Study between Intrauterine Device Insertion During Cesarean Section Versus Delayed Insertion after 40 Days of Labor and 3 Months after Labor
Background: One method of preventing conception is the use of an intrauterine device (IUD), which is a small, T-shaped contraceptive implanted into the uterus. Aim: To compare post-placental IUD insertion during cesarean section versus delayed IUD insertion after 40 days and after 3 months, according to efficacy, complication, and patient satisfaction. Patients and methods: This was a Randomized Clinical research study performed at the outpatient obstetrics clinics of Al Azhar University Hospital, and follow-up was done with patients after 6 weeks, after 6 months, and after 12 months from 8/2022 to 12/2023. All cases were separated into groups: PPIUD Group: 100 women who received Post-Placental Intrauterine Device Insertion During Cesarean Section. DIUD1 Group: 100 women received a Delayed Intrauterine Device Insertion (After 40 days of delivery). DIUD2 Group: 100 women received a Delayed Intrauterine Device Insertion (after 3 months of delivery). Results: According to Follow up at 6 weeks, there was highly significance variation among the examined groups concerning Partial expulsion, there was statistically significance difference between the studied groups regarding Irregular bleeding/spotting, while there was no significance distinction among the examined groups concerning Pain/dysmenorrhea, Complete expulsion, Uterine perforation, Excessive bleeding, Genital infection and Pregnancy. Conclusion: PPIUD is a safe and effective method associated with lower rates of Pain, dysmenorrhea, irregular bleeding, menorrhagia, and perforation than delayed insertion after 40 days and after 3 months of delivery. DIUD1 and DIUD2 are associated with lower rates of expulsion than PPIUD.
