Prevalence of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders and their Associated Factors among Nurses in Al-Azhar University Hospitals

Abstract

Background: The term "work-related musculoskeletal disorders" (WRMDs) refers to problems with the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and supporting structures of the upper and lower limbs, neck, and lower back. These problems can be caused, worsened, or triggered by sudden physical demand or long-term exposure to various risk factors. Aim and objectives: Among the nursing staff at Al-Hussein and Bab Al-Sharia, two campuses of Al-Azhar University, in order to ascertain the frequency and causes of WRMDs. Subjects and methods: From October 2023 through September 2024, 206 nurses from Cairo's Al-Hussein and Bab El-sharia Al-Azhar university hospitals participated in this cross-sectional study. Results: People who work shifts, work overtime, struggle to keep up with work speed, do not have enough rest time during working hours, and do not have regular rest at work were more likely to have chronic WRMDs (P<0.01). Conclusion: There is an increased risk of WRMDs for hospital professionals due to the intricate structure of the health care industry. Nearly two-thirds of the people surveyed reported experiencing acute WRMDs and nearly eighty-one percent reported chronic WRMDs in the past year. Lastly, a positive association between the severity of WRMDs and job absenteeism was found, which was extremely significant.
